From the Baltic Sea to the Barents Sea

17 days full of impressions and 4x4 adventure!
This is the longest and most extended 4x4 tour of the Northwest part of Russia.
The tour starts in Saint-Petersburg, goes via Karelia to Murmansk on the Kola Peninsula. You will cross
the Polar Circle! The tour is a mix of different roads, from asphalt to old forests and mountain roads, and even on sandy
beaches, and dune areas.
You get to be acquainted with the most famous places of Northwest Russia with excursions in Saint-Petersburg
"Venice of the North", the Kivach waterfalls, ancient rock carvings, the Solovetsky Islands in the White Sea
and your guide will show you the nice places on the Kola Peninsula which are inaccessible for other types of
vehicles, like old Pomor villages on the White Sea Tersky Coast, Stalinists labour camps of the years 1930th and
1940th in the tundra and you will have beautiful views from a point on 1100 meters high in the Lovozero
mountains.
Your experienced guide will drive a 4x4 Russian army truck. The truck has a winch and all necessary
tools not to be stuck and serves as service car for the 4x4 car-participants and helps them in difficult
situations. The bus is well equipped for 6 passengers and contains a 220V generator, refrigerators and a kitchen.
The accommodation during the 4x4 tour will be in hotels lodges and tents. You will experience delicious
traditional meals, the midnight sun and the culture of our beautiful Russian North.

Northwest Russia Off-road tour description: |
Day 1,Saturday: Guide meets you at the border. Travel to Saint
Petersburg, check-in at hotel. Walk along the Neva Embankment in the evening.
Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 2, Sunday: After breakfast sightseeing tour in Saint Petersburg by
minibus (3 hours). Lunch in an old restaurant beside Palace Square. Visit the
Hermitage. Dinner in the Count Souvorov Restaurant in the tower of Vorontsovsky
Palace. In the evening – music show in the Saint Petersburg Music Hall.
Overnight at the hotel.
Day 3, Monday: Breakfast. Travel to Petrozavodsk (~600 km). This is
without a guide as it is by major road. Lunch can be in any roadside café. Hotel
check-in upon arrival. Hiking excursion in the city according to our
recommendations and a city map. Dinner in a restaurant. Overnight at the hotel.
(You should take care of some sandwiches and drinks with you for the next day
lunch because the Kizhi Island doesn’t have any possibility to get meal).
Day 4, Tuesday: Breakfast. Drive to the harbour. At 10.00 a boat starts
for an excursion to Kizhi Island. A guide meets you at Kizhi place. Coming back
at 16.30. Drive to the "Northern Odissey" Club for watching marine museum
exposition and visiting replicas of old ships. Dinner on a board of one of the
ship. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 5, Wednesday: Breakfast. Start to drive to Marsialnye Vody (Mars’
Water) Resort and Kivach Waterfall. Continue to the Girvas Volcano – the route
pass through the old Russian village of Kosalma situated between two lakes.
Lunch on the way. Continue to Kem and check-in at hotel on the White Sea shore.
Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 6, Thursday: After breakfast at 07:30 o’clock sea excursion to
Solovetsky Islands; lunch in a restaurant; return in the evening.
Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 7, Friday: Drive 325 km along the main road. Lunch in a roadside café
on the way. Arrival in Kandalaksha and check-in at a hotel. Dinner in a
restaurant (without a guide). In the evening you can drive/walk to the old
quarter of Kandalaksha to view old Pomor houses and have a nice view over the
Kanda Bay.
4x4 Polar Off-road tour (KTOR01)
Day 8, Saturday: Breakfast. Guide picks you up at 8:00 o’clock and
drive eastwards; Your Polar Off-road Adventure starts after 5 km with a
breath taking downhill drive to the White Sea shore where we stop for short walk
to the ancient stone structure of the 'Babylon' Labyrinth. Lunch in forest.
Continue to Umba village to watch a performance by the Pomor Folk Ensemble.
Proceed to beautiful wooden cottage on the White Sea coast close to Umba, where
we will have sauna, dinner and overnight.
Asphalt: 110 km, Gravel: 0 km, Off-road: 30 km.
Day 9, Sunday: After breakfast drive to fishing settlement Tetrina Tonya for excursion.
Continue driving along the coast; weather-permitting, a swim at a sand beach.
Lunch by the sea. Arrive at Kashkarantsy, a traditional Pomor village. Drive a
picturesque coastal track to Lodochny Bay. Visit the Chapel of the Unknown Monk.
Visit an old Amethyst mine close to "Cape Ship" which juts far into
the White Sea. Sauna, dinner and overnight at our simple wooden houses on
Lodochny Ruchey. In the evening you can try your luck in finding your own lucky Amethyst stone or go for a swim in the White Sea.
Asphalt: 40 km, Gravel: 60 km, Off-road: 60 km.
Day 10, Monday: Breakfast. Drive to the mouth of the Varzuga River – the
easternmost point on the Kola Peninsula accessible by terrain vehicles. We
continue the sandy roads to the 17th century village of Kuzomen. Lunch in Pine
dunes. Via sand dunes and forest roads, continue to Varzuga, the earliest
settlement on the Tersky Coast. Visit the still-functioning Uspenskaya Orthodox
Church, constructed in 1674. Optional by rowing boat across the Varzuga River,
for a walk among traditional wooden houses and a short hike through forest to
springs welling out of the sand (8 km). Drive back for overnight and sauna and dinner in
our cosy wooden houses on Lodochny Ruchey. Possibility to drive more along the
shore or forest tracks or to find Amethyst stones.
Asphalt: 0 km, Gravel: 25 km, Off-road: 50 km.
Remark: This day can also be done in opposite direction depending on the tide of the White Sea.
Day 11, Tuesday: After breakfast drive back for 80 km to a small village along coast gravel road and continue north wards to Kirovsk via an unused
challenging forest road. We have to concur muddy, stony and sandy tracks and to
cross several rivers. Wilderness lunch. In the end of the day we will enter a small
remote village named Inga, where we enjoy the ready sauna, dinner and spend the
night in our typical Saami turf house where you will sleep on reindeer fur.
Asphalt 30 km, Gravel: 100 km, Off-road: 70 km.
Day 12, Wednesday: Breakfast. We continue the forest road further
northwards and on the horizon we can see the Khibiny Mountains. The tracks are
like day 5. Lunch in lumberjack house in Oktyabrsky. Then we drive a muddy road with a lot of
water pools to the rests of a Stalinist labour camp. Dinner, sauna and overnight
in our lumberjack guesthouse "Yolki Palki" in twin rooms in a
remote village, named Oktyabrsky close to Khibiny Mountains,.
Asphalt: 0 km, Gravel: 0 km, Off-road: 70 km to village + 40 km to Stalinist
Camp and back.
Day 13, Thursday: After breakfast we drive to a valley in the centre of the
Khibiny Mountains to a mountain lake and waterfall. Wilderness lunch. during
day. Sauna, dinner and overnight in small mountain hotel. Asphalt 35 km, Gravel:7 km, Off-road: 25 km.
Day 14, Friday: Breakfast. We continue the mountain valley to the north
and pass a beautiful lake area. We are going to drive around Khibiny
Mountains via beautiful forests with desolate villages on the Imandra Lake
shore. This track is quite heavy with muddy, stony parts and many rivers to
wade through. The track end up at the Apatity factory. From there we drive to
the guesthouse in Oktyabrsky. Sauna, dinner and overnight. Asphalt 50 km, Gravel:0 km, Off-road: 70 km.
Remark: For tours in June day 7 and 8 can also be done in opposite direction
with a chance to drive the same way back depending on the snow conditions in the mountains.
Day 15, Saturday: After breakfast we have two options depending on
the water levels of lakes and rivers. When the water levels are low we
will drive off-road along the foot of the Lovozero Tundra and have to cross many
rivers; bridges are broken or not trustful. We come up close to the mining
village Revda. We continue by usual road to Saami village Lovozero. Asphalt: 30
km, Gravel: 0 km, Off-road: 90 km. OR:
When the levels are high than the risk is too high for our vehicles by water and
we will drive on asphalt via Monchegorsk to Lovozero. Lunch in Monchegorsk.
Optional: 2 hour yachting on Imandra lake.
Optional: excursion in Saami museum in Lovozero village.
Asphalt: 230 km, Gravel: 5 km.
Check-in in a small and cosy hotel. Sauna and dinner in the evening.
Day 16, Sunday: Breakfast. Drive to the miner’s settlement Revda located
at the foot of the Lovozero Mountains. Proceed to one of the mountain summits of
Lovozero Mountains (1.106 m) with steep walls of 200 m and with beautiful view
on the Kola Peninsula. Lunch, and drive to Worlds biggest city above the Polar
Circle Murmansk. Check-in at the hotel in the centre. Dinner on your own.
Asphalt: 220 km, Gravel: 0 km, Off-road: 20 km.
Day 17, Monday: Breakfast in hotel. Spend some time in the centre of
Murmansk and/or departure Murmansk to continue your own route to Ivalo in
Finland ( asphalt: 200 km, Gravel: 100 km) or to Kirkenes in Norway (asphalt:
300 km). When you have more time visit some interesting museums like the
Historical Museum and the Northern Fleet Museum or have an excursion tour (optional).
